It is always the light that fascinates me. The change of light on colour can evoke such feelings from sheer terror to absolute bliss. A day can change from black clouds, dark shadows angry seas to sunfilled sky and bright cheery colours that lift the senses. I paint landscapes and seascapes pleinair or work in a studio with a model.
Although I have dabbled with a few what I call abstract realist subjects in the past, my work is realist impressionist. I paint what I see. The light changes from minute to minute when painting outside and often a photo is needed to carry on with the desired feeling of colour and light on returning to the studio.
My subject matter is quite diverse but I am probably best known for my seascapes especially the South Hams in Devon and Salcombe. Salcombe is an everending inspiration as the light and subject matter is constantly changing. I have had a studio there for the past 18 years and have never wearied of painting a similar subject as it is always different! I also paint horses – my other passion other than the sea, and portraits either in oil or pastel.
I studied Graphic Design at St Martins School of Art in the mid to late 60s but I have always painted since a child – winning a commended at the Royal Drawing Society at the age of 8. I have exhibited Nationally on many occasions with The RA, NEAC, ROI, SWA, Society of Equestrian Artists (Associate Member) and others. After college I worked as an illustrator and graphic designer and latterly as a freelance Art Director. I have worked for WH Smith, The AA, BCA, Bristol Museum, a point of sale studio and an American Motivation company, various advertising agencies and Hamlyns Book Company. I have always found time to keep painting, and I have painted full time since the early 1980s.
My paintings have been reproduced as magazine covers (Country Life) as greeting cards and on calendars. Most of my work can be seen on the Bridgeman Art Library who licence my secondary copywright in London, New York, Berlin and Paris. www.bridgemanimages.com. Prints can be ordered from them from the list of my images. I also produce limited edition prints of my own and they can be viewed on the Limited Edition Prints section of this site.
